Overhead Crane Budget Planning
The crane price is only one part of the project. A useful budget must also account for the runway, power feeding, controls, delivery, installation and commissioning. This guide shows buyers what changes the total cost and how to compare quotations on the same scope.
Installed crane projects are priced around the building and the work, not capacity alone.
The Short Answer
An overhead crane supplier may quote the crane equipment only, or a wider package that includes runway steel, electrical power feeding, shipping, erection and testing. Both can be legitimate, but they are not the same budget. Before comparing numbers, separate the project into four scopes.
Bridge girders, end carriages, hoist or trolley, controls, electrics and safety devices.
Runway beams, rails, columns, conductor system, access and building coordination.
Packing, container loading, sea or land freight, insurance and destination handling.
Erection, alignment, commissioning, testing, training, documents and local approvals.
Budget rule: do not compare an equipment-only quotation with an installed-project quotation. Ask every supplier to mark included, excluded and optional items.
Price Drivers
These factors interact. For example, a longer span may increase bridge weight and wheel loads, which can also change the runway. A higher duty class may change the hoist, motors, brakes and controls even when rated capacity stays the same.
Include the load, slings and lifting devices. Frequent near-capacity lifts need a different design from occasional light loads.
Span affects bridge design; hook height and approach determine the hoist layout and available building clearance.
Single girder, double girder, low-headroom hoist, top-running trolley and open winch systems have different structures and access needs.
Lifts per hour, travel distance, load cycles and required speeds influence motors, brakes, gearing and service life.
Pendant, radio remote, cabin, variable-frequency drives, anti-sway, synchronization and positioning add different control requirements.
Existing rail alignment, runway strength, columns, access, clearances and power supply can add work outside the crane itself.
Outdoor, dusty, hot, corrosive, hazardous or clean areas require suitable protection, components, materials and documentation.
Packing, freight, cranes for erection, labour, supervision, testing and destination rules change the delivered project cost.

Capacity Is Only the Starting Point
Capacity affects the hoist, bridge and wheel loads, but there is no honest price multiplier that applies to every project. A short-span 10 ton maintenance crane can be simpler than a long-span 5 ton production crane running many cycles per shift.

Heavy trolleys, long spans, walkways, process attachments and frequent service can justify a double girder overhead crane and a project-specific runway review.
A 10 ton marking does not reveal the span, duty, runway loads or project scope.
Heavy-duty cranes may require a larger trolley, service access and more demanding runway coordination.
Compare the Same Scope
An equipment quotation commonly covers the bridge, hoist or trolley, end carriages, electrics and controls. A completed project may also need the following work, which should be listed instead of hidden in a single number.

These examples are planning illustrations, not customer quotations or fixed price promises. They show which questions change the engineering and scope.
Short span, occasional lifts, existing runway and simple radio control can keep the equipment and site scope relatively straightforward.
Longer travel, regular handling near capacity, tighter hook approach and a runway check can add structural, control and installation work.
A top-running trolley, walkway, cabin or process attachment can increase bridge, runway, access and commissioning requirements.

Questions Buyers Ask
There is no reliable universal figure. A useful budget needs the rated load, load spectrum, span, lifting height, runway condition, duty, hoist arrangement, controls, power supply, destination and installation scope. Quotes that omit these details are not comparable.
It often has a lower bridge weight and simpler hoist arrangement for moderate loads and duty. It is not automatically the lowest total project cost if the layout sacrifices hook height, exceeds runway limits or cannot support the required operating cycle.
The hoist, bridge steel, motors, brakes, end carriages and wheel loads can all change. The increase is not a fixed multiplier because span, duty, hook height and the existing runway may differ between the two projects.
Sometimes, but not always. Ask the supplier to state whether runway beams, rails, columns, power feeding, access platforms and civil work are included, excluded or supplied by another contractor.
They may be. Packing method, container loading, destination, inland transport, lifting equipment, installation labour, travel, supervision, testing and local permits should be listed so the delivered and installed scope is clear.
Send the complete suspended load, load dimensions, span, lifting height, runway length and elevation, operating frequency, control preference, voltage, building drawings, installation country and the scope you expect the supplier to cover.
Compare the same capacity, span, duty, speeds, hoist type, controls, electrical brand level, runway scope, freight, installation, testing, documentation, warranty and after-sales support. The lowest equipment-only number may not be the lowest completed-project cost.
