5 Ton Overhead Crane for Machine Shops

A 5 ton overhead crane can be a practical fit for moving chucks, fixtures, motors, tooling and finished assemblies. Capacity alone does not settle the design. The crane must clear the machines, match the runway and handle the real lifting pattern without slowing the operator.

Capacity Check

Start with the heaviest complete lift

The crane sees more than the workpiece. A 4.6 ton component plus a 600 kg lifting fixture is already above a 5 ton rating. The same applies to slings, clamps, spreader beams and anything else below the hook.

List the heaviest current lift and the heaviest realistic future lift. That simple check prevents a crane from being undersized before span, speed or controls are even discussed.

When 5 tons covers the complete load, a single girder overhead crane is often the most direct layout to review first.

Building and Lifting Path

Measure the shop before choosing the crane

A machine shop is usually crowded with fixed equipment. Span, hook height and hook approach have to be checked against the machine layout, not written down as three separate numbers.

Span and runway

Confirm the rail centerline distance, runway length, support arrangement and the condition of existing beams or columns.

Usable hook height

Measure the hook travel needed above machines, truck beds and fixtures, then compare it with the roof and runway elevation.

Hook approach

Mark the points where the hook must reach. End approach and side approach can decide whether a machine is actually serviceable.

Obstructions

Record lights, ducts, roof bracing, busbars, pipes, doors and any high equipment that crosses the crane envelope.

Operating Duty

A 5 ton rating does not define the duty

A crane used for occasional maintenance is not specified the same way as a crane feeding machines through every shift. Record typical load weights, lifts per shift, starts per hour and travel distance.

Occasional maintenance lifts

Long idle periods and a small number of lifts can still involve full load. Record the heaviest maintenance task and the time needed to position it.

Regular machining and assembly

Repeated handling of 1 to 3 ton parts with occasional full-load lifts often benefits from smooth travel, radio control and carefully selected approach dimensions.

Production feeding

Frequent starts, long travel and repeated loading can change motor, brake, wheel and hoist selection even though the rated capacity remains 5 tons.

Often, yes. A top-running single girder bridge crane is a common starting point at this capacity. The final choice still depends on span, duty, hook approach, runway capacity and the required lifting height. A double girder layout can make sense for demanding duty, long spans, service access or a specific hook elevation.

Yes. The rated load applies to everything suspended from the hook. Add the workpiece, sling, lifting beam, clamp, spreader or fixture before confirming that 5 tons is enough.

Measure from the floor to the highest point the hook must reach, then check the roof, runway elevation and hoist headroom. The correct number is the usable hook travel required by the process, not simply the building height.
